Through his light painting workshops, Denis mentors beginner to advanced photographers and leads them into the night to create ethereal and mind-blowing images.
I have been a commercial and fine art photographer for 10 years. As an Olympus Visionary I push the equipment hard both in the conditions I use them, and the locations I take them. By the nature of my light painting photography the equipment is always at the outer limits of what photography is. The darkest nights combined with brightest lights. Olympus are constantly bringing robust, lightweight and ultra capable cameras to market that let me push myself harder in all aspects of my work.
My light painting photography has predominantly been around the full moon, I love the daylight looking effect a long moonlit exposure gives. In recent times I have been experimenting with combining light painting and astro photography. By their natures, two incredibly difficult things to combine. The intense sensitivity the camera needs to be at means my tools need to be incredibly dim to bend into the exposure seamlessly.
Discovering the new Olympus OM-D E-M1 Mark III with Starry Sky AF has removed one of the most difficult aspects of astro photography. This amazing feature was faultless during my first experiments. I simply pointed the camera at the sky, no matter how many other elements were in the frame, and it nailed the focus on the stars every time. This left me to focus on creating interesting images without that worry.
I love star trails and found the Starry Sky AF performed faultlessly both under a star filled dark outback sky or around a large city filled with light pollution. This combined with Live Composite gave me mind bending results.
The Olympus E-M1 Mark III felt like a small OM-D E-M1X, the controls felt familiar and the speed with which the functions happened. It was responsive and powerful, but incredibly light weight. When I am climbing to get to a crazy location, or walking down a boulder strewn gorge, the gear never felt bulky.
I am excited about pushing my astro photography, with the combination of accurate focus on the stars, high performance processing and a robust lightweight camera, the E-M1 Mark III is going to be an integral part of my kit.
