Photojournalist and deputy representative of the NPO Dialogue for People. Currently, she covers refugee issues, poverty and disasters in Southeast Asia, the Middle East, Africa and Japan. Of the areas affected by the Great East Japan Earthquake, she has mainly focused on Rikuzentakata City. A graduate of Sophia University, she currently appears as a commentator on TBS TV’s ”Sunday Morning” program.
Tohoku, the Life and Work
Nine years have passed since the Great East Japan Earthquake of March 11th, 2011. While a gradual return to daily life has been possible in many parts of Tohoku, the recovery process has not been equal across the region. There are still places where survivors remain living as evacuees in temporary housing. But it’s not simply sadness that is carved into this land.
For me, the past nine years have filled with a fascination for the sea, mountains, seasonal festivals, and treasures that are unique to Tohoku. In my photos I have included a respect for a culture that has been passed down through generations.
Due to the coronavirus pandemic I was prevented from returning to Tohoku to continue this series. With the desire to return with my camera along with a wish for further reconstruction, I chose the photograph of plum blossoms seen in Okuma Town, Fukushima Prefecture as the final image.
